29–30 September 2026 | 9:30 am – 3:00 pm | 14 students — Pre-Conference
This two-day pre-conference workshop focuses on developing strong observational skills through measured drawings and close study of plant structure. Participants will explore ways to capture surface texture, fine detail, and the power of tonal and colour contrast to describe form, depth, and character. Working step by step from observation to drawing and painting, the workshop emphasises scientific accuracy alongside artistic clarity, helping students refine their technique and confidence in botanical illustration.
This intensive two-day workshop invites participants to explore the subtle power of precision in botanical illustration. Through measured drawings, close observation, and analytical seeing, we will learn how to truly understand a plant's structure, proportion, and presence in space. Participants will focus on capturing surface texture, delicate details, and the expressive use of tonal contrast to reveal form, depth, and character.
Working from carefully selected plant material, we will move step by step from observation to drawing and painting, strengthening the connection between scientific accuracy and artistic interpretation. Emphasis will be placed on slowing down, seeing clearly, and making confident visual decisions — learning not only how to draw a plant, but why it appears the way it does. This workshop is designed for those who wish to deepen their observational skills, refine technical control, and bring clarity, richness, and life to their botanical work through thoughtful precision.
